What has shaped you?
One of the main things that has shaped me is
other people. Everybody I've gotten to know in
life I've taken something away from. Whether
it's listening to a differing opinion than mine,
seeing an admirable personality trait, or learning
more of a subject I knew little about, I gain a
more informed and open mind. I incorporate
this mentality into my graphic design work by
opening myself up to learning about the subject,
client, and target audience, as this directly shapes
my design decisions.
editorial cover
Challenge:
To create a masthead based off any human
innovation of my choosing, then to use this title
as a basis for a magazine concept, cover and twopage
spread.
Solution:
I decided that it will be about environmentally friendly
technology with news, product reviews,
editorials and other articles. This cover and spread
reflect the contemporary style of the magazine.
package design
Challenge:
To create bottle labelling and package design for a
four-pack of ginger beer.
Solution:
I made the design to look slightly worn or grungy,
to reflect the product name of "Old Jamaican"
ginger beer, as well as suit the spicy taste of the
beverage. The colour scheme was inspired by
earth tones and the Jamaican flag to create a look
that is unique to the product.
corporate identity
Challenge:
To redesign the identity for Corus Entertainment,
giving the corporation a professional and
focused look with elements of fun and
enjoyment.
Solution:
The logo consists of a central rectangle emitting
parallel lines that become wider and lighter
in colour as they extend outward. This visualizes
the exciting and stimulating entertainment
being broadcast into people's homes across the
country, whether the symbol is seen as a speaker
emitting sound waves or a television emitting a
glow of light.
poster design
Challenge:
To create a poster that will promote Hot Docs, a
Documentary Film Festival held in Toronto, Ontario.
Solution:
I wanted to focus on the fact that documentaries
capture reality, unlike the other film genres that
fake reality. A gesturing actor in the midst of motion
capture is in front of a special effects green-screen
with studio equipment in the foreground and
background. The headline "Get Real" implies that
the reader should break from watching computergenerated
fiction.
collage
Challenge:
To manipulate at least 8 photos from various
sources into a conceptual illustration.
Solution:
I created this collaged image of a steam-powered
human heart in the style of Victorian-era
mechanics, incorporating images of technical
diagrams, gears, lights, and metal rivets.
